How to choose a
baby gift? Many of us thought buying a baby gift is
very easy. In fact, it can be a very
stressful exercise. With the available
budget to spend, we would want something which is value for money,
presentable and most useful to the recipients and their newborns. We
can indeed ask ourselves some basic questions before deciding what gifts to
buy for the newborns: 1. What is my budget? 2.
How
close I am with the mother and the baby? 3.
Do I
know what does the mother desire in a baby gift? 4.
Could
I check with the mother what she wants most for a gift? 5.
Do I
know already what the mother has bought for her newborn? 6.
Do I
have the time to shop for the gift? 7.
Do I
have the time to wrap or to decorate the gift? 8.
Do I
have time to deliver the gift myself? 9.
What
do I look for in selecting a baby gift – practicality or presentable? 10. Do I know whether the mother is
breastfeeding or bottle feeding her baby? 11. Is it a baby boy or baby girl? 12. Is it a first time mother/first baby? Above is not an exhaustive list. Having to answer some or all of the
questions above, it makes the selecting process much easier. Below are some suggestions on practical
baby gift, some are expensive but the life span and practicality are much
longer: · Pram/stroller – as cheap as
RM60 or as expensive as RM1500 per unit. · Car
seat · Baby
cot or play pen. · Bottle
steamer
– a useful piece during travelling. ·
Breast pump – excellent piece for
breastfeeding mums. Discussion should
be held with the mum before buying as she may have preference in certain
brands or she may already get herself one before delivery. ·
Ear thermometer – a necessity
caring parents must have. Very useful
when the child is down with fever and parents need this to monitor the
temperature. · Baby
carrier
– life span is short as it is only applicable for the first few months or up
to 7-8 months of the newborn. ·
Baby clothing – preferably 6
months onwards. Babies normally
outgrow their clothing very fast and it’s always advisable to buy bigger size
clothes. ·
Mitten and booties – mothers do not
mind additional pairs because during the first three months, their babies
just love the fingers and the change over are very fast. Furthermore, babies like to practise ‘kung
fu’ during these months; mitten will prevent them from scratching their face. · Baby
disposable diaper
– I am sure every mum does not mind receiving more of this. A bigger size may be appropriate. ·
Reusable nappies – again new mum
will not mind additional because the nappy changing rate for a newborn is
exceptionally high. If it is a rainy
day, there go the napkins. · Baby
developmental toy
– this may not be useful immediately, but definitely a playmate for the baby
as he grows. · Child
caring books for first time mother. · Books
on baby food recipe. · Baby
sling
– for mothers always on the run. · Diaper
bag. · Cooler
case
– if the mother is a working mother and would like to breastfeed after going
back to work. · Mosquito
net –
· Bibs - this is useful when the baby grows and
their saliva drips non-stop! Below are some common items which the
mother or the new parents will normally buy before the arrival of their
little ones. Some parents may also
already buy items listed above. So,
the best way is to check with the mother what she already has and does not
have. However, for some items as
mentioned in this article, new mums do not mind additional. ·
Newborn clothing (first three
months). ·
·
Mother’s need – nursing bra,
disposable panties, sanitary pads, breast pad. ·
Feeding bottles - bottles may not
be of use if the mother is breastfeeding.
However, bottles will be of use when the mother goes back to work and
also I believe some mums do not mind as the life span of a feeding bottle is
only about 2 - 3 months. Buy the big
volumetric one for use in later months. ·
Baby lotion, shampoo, oil, talcum powder
and hair shampoo
– personal experiences indicate that newborns normally do not use body
shampoo for the first month. And with
regard to baby oil and lotion, some parents may use them. I believe hair shampoo is the only one that
most parents use as the babies’ hair and scalp needs to be cleaned. Also parents are normally very particular
with these items as some babies have skin allergy and parents would like to
have their personal preference). ·
Baby wipes or cotton pads – personal
experience finds cotton pads work much better than the wipes, furthermore
they come in no fragrant. Though,
wipes are useful when the mother is travelling with a small baby and it’s
troublesome to use cotton pad as water is needed. ·
Washable nappies. ·
Baby disposable diaper ·
Baby detergent. ·
Baby nappy cream. ·
Nappy liners. ·
Handkerchiefs - but new mums
would not mind additional. ·
Bottle brush. ·
Nappy pins or hooks. ·
Caps or head covers. ·
Baby bath tub. ·
Thermo flask. ·
Pacifier. ·
Changing mat. Besides buying gifts for the newborns,
perhaps you may want to consider buying simple gifts for the older siblings
too. For example books and toys. This is to make the old siblings feeling
better and not being neglected upon the arrival of the newborn! |
